CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (CEL) OR MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL)
Today’s vehicles integrate the use of computers and sensors more and more on every part of your car or truck. Designed to alert you to potential problems, these electronic systems can detect even the slightest abnormality. When a check engine light or malfunction indicator lamp lights up on your dash the computer (ECU) stores a code in its memory. Retrieval of this code is done by connecting a scan tool to your vehicle’s computer. The scan tool then reads out any codes stored in the computer. These error codes tell you the area or circuit of the vehicle where the problem was noted.
Retrieving the error codes for the check engine light from the computer actually does very little to tell you what is wrong with your vehicle! Many places advertise they will check engine lights for free with a minimal service and recommend or replace parts to turn the check engine light off. This is just guesswork! Each system has many parts, all of which are capable of triggering an error code. Many shops do not have the proper training or tools to accurately diagnose the cause of the problem. The light can be reset or turned off. If not properly diagnosed or the wrong part is replaced, the check engine light may come back on when you drive the vehicle!
At Acurit Auto Repair we offer a complete diagnostic solution. First, we access the computer error codes. Second, we determine what area(s) of the vehicle is/are referenced by the code(s). Third, using the manufacturer’s recommended diagnostic procedures, we perform tests of all system components to determine the actual cause of the malfunction. This saves you time and money in the long run! After completing the repair using only the highest quality parts available, the codes are cleared and your vehicle is road tested with a scan tool to verify the repair is complete!
